FAMILY FARM

Small scale farmers in our community, Union La Bolivarense, focus mainly on dairy production, and it’s been this way for decades. This means there’s a lot to learn about what other animals and crops could be successful in our ecological zone.

We are constantly adding to our repertoire of crops and animals. Check out our blog for updates on new projects that we believe contribute to health and balance.

CROPS

Scattered throughout the farm, we grow corn, yucca, taro, papaya, naranjilla, sugar cane, and various bananas and citrus trees. We grow lettuce, radishes, hot peppers, bell peppers, and cilantro, and continue to experiment growing others.

GUINEA PIGS

These animals are a delicacy in Ecuadorian cuisine deeply rooted in the country’s indigenous history. We have around a hundred guinea pigs at any given moment. Guinea pig is considered a healthy meat option (low in cholesterol and high in collagen), and its manure helps support healthy soil.

TILAPIA

A hardy fish, tilapia has proven to contribute nicely to protein production at Nido de Vida. While water availability during the dry season and low water temperature are not ideal for tilapia development, we are able to raise enough tilapia to satisfy family consumption.
